Special Needs Network Summer Camp Event at Joe Patton Academy Camp (JPAC) Los Angeles CA 20238/4/2023
Low-liability games and interactive activities for children with special needs and their familiesWe partnered with the Special Needs Network at their summer camp at JPAC (Joe Patton Academy Camp) in Los Angeles, bringing in interactive sports games and activities for more than 300 children with special needs and their siblings. The day gave kids and families time to be outside, spend time together, and take part in something built around them. The activity area focused on low-liability games that allowed each child to participate at their own pace, with staff nearby to assist when needed. Families stayed close, stepping in, encouraging, and sharing those moments throughout the day. A Full Day for the KidsThe day included more than just the activity area. The Special Needs Network built out a full schedule with learning sessions, creative activities, and performances, giving the kids a chance to try different things throughout the day. Our role fit into that as the outdoor activity space—giving them time to step away, move around, and spend time playing with their families in between everything else. The activities were low-liability and selected to meet risk management guidelines, so they could be used safely across a wide range of abilities. 3-in-1 Sports Center: A Favorite for Youth Outreach Event PlanningThe 3-in-1 Sports Trio stayed busy throughout the day, with kids stepping up to throw, kick, and take their shot while others gathered around and waited for their turn. With over 300 kids at the event, it kept up with the demand, keeping kids moving through without long lines or waiting around. Batter Up Baseball: A Big Win for the Special Needs Network Summer CampBatter Up Baseball gave kids the chance to step up and take a swing for the fences in a safe, controlled way. With staff right there to guide each turn, kids were able to focus on the swing, make contact, and stay with it. It added a familiar sports moment to the day while keeping everything appropriate for the environment and the group. Oversized Ring Toss: Classic FunThe Oversized Ring Toss gave kids a clear, approachable activity where they could step in, take their turn, and stay part of the action. With large soft rings and upright targets, the game worked across a wide range of abilities, allowing kids to play on their own or with support when needed. It kept things moving without pressure, giving each child a chance to participate, reset, and try again. Throughout the day, it became one of those steady activities where kids could stay engaged, build confidence, and enjoy being outside alongside everyone else. Dual Hoop Shot Basketball: A Slam Dunk for Special Needs Youth OutreachThe Dual Hoop Shot Basketball game had players step up, grab a ball, and take shots at multiple hoops with different point values—similar to a skeeball-style scoring system where closer hoops are easier to hit and higher targets take more control. That worked well for this event because kids could play right next to each other without needing distance or power to participate. The hoops sit close to the front, making it easier to score, while still giving options to aim higher. Staff and caregivers were able to stand alongside participants, helping guide shots when needed without stopping the flow of the game. The enclosed design kept the balls contained, so kids stayed focused on playing instead of chasing them down. McDonald’s Sponsored Lunch and Kids We’re Lovin’ It at This Youth Outreach Summer CampWhile we didn’t provide the food service for this event, McDonald’s stepped in as the lunch sponsor and kept things running smoothly. Each child received a Happy Meal with fries, apple slices, and a Marvel toy, giving everyone a chance to sit down, recharge, and enjoy a familiar meal. It created a natural break in the day where kids could relax before heading back into activities. With lunch fully handled, staff and volunteers stayed focused on supporting the kids and keeping the event moving without interruption.
