An evening of games, movement, and community coming together at Memorial Park

On July 3rd, 2024, Memorial Park in Sierra Madre filled up quickly as families arrived for the YMCA’s 4th of July community event. Kids made a beeline for the games, parents followed close behind, and before long the entire park was in motion—laughing, competing, and settling into an easy rhythm of play.

From 5:30 to 9:30 PM, the focus stayed on simple, active fun. A dedicated kids area was created as part of an all-inclusive event package, with interactive games and attractions selected to work for a wide range of ages. The space was arranged so families could move easily from one activity to the next, keeping the experience organized and easy to enjoy throughout the evening.

Planning Around the Crowd, the Space, and the Purpose

For this 4th of July community event in Sierra Madre, everything started with understanding who the event was for and how the park would be used throughout the evening. Families, younger kids, and teens were all part of the mix, so the activities needed to work across a wide range of ages without feeling limited to just one group.

Memorial Park gave plenty of room to work with, but it still needed to be organized in a way that made sense. The goal was to keep things moving without crowding any one area, while making it easy for families to step in and out of activities as they went.

How the Kids Area Was Designed and Laid Out​

The half-circle setup made the entire kids area easy to take in the moment you walked up. From the outside, you could see every activity at once, which made it simple for families to decide where to start without stopping to figure anything out.

The 30' climbing rock wall anchored the center, giving the space a clear focal point, while the rest of the games wrapped around it in a way that felt open instead of spread out. Nothing felt hidden or out of reach—everything was right there in front of you.

Built for Families, Set Up for Safety​

​There was something for everyone, with many attractions designed to be low-liability and kid-friendly. We had a dedicated ride operator at each attraction to ensure participant safety. Colorful safety flagging was used to clearly mark off each area and prevent people from entering restricted zones. Safety is always our top priority; while we always aim to make the experience interactive, fun, and exciting, we never compromise on safety.

Keeping the Lines Moving

Most of the games were quick-turn activities, so kids could step in, take a shot, a throw, or a turn, and move right along without waiting around. Basketball challenges like Connect 3 and Hoop Shot, along with Fast Pitch and the 3-in-1 Sports Trio, kept a steady rotation going across the space.

The 30' climbing rock wall stayed active with multiple climbers going at the same time, so even as the main feature, it didn’t slow things down. It gave older kids something more challenging while the rest of the area stayed fast and easy to jump into.

That mix is what kept the area moving—some kids locked into one game, others bounced across the lineup, but nothing stalled out or backed up.

A Mix That Worked Across Ages

There wasn’t any separation of entertainment by age—kids lined up, parents stood with them, and most jumped in and played alongside them. With multiple games running at once, people moved from one activity to the next without needing direction or structure.

Kids gathered around as prizes were handed out, with the host calling out winners and keeping the games moving from one round to the next.

Dunk Tank Crowd Moments

The dunk tank drew a crowd as YMCA staff and administrators took turns in the seat. People gathered around to watch, laugh, and see who would get dropped next. It wasn’t something everyone jumped into—it was part of the experience, adding a fun, shared moment that people stopped for before moving on to the rest of the event.

Sound and Announcements Across the Event

Announcements, game calls, and prize moments were easy to hear throughout the event, with the host leading activities and keeping everything moving from one area to the next. The sound setup tied everything together, from the kids games to crowd moments like the dunk tank.

All Part of One Complete Event

Everything from the activities and layout to the hosting, sound, and coordination was handled as part of one all-inclusive event pacakge. It allowed the YMCA to focus on the event itself while everything behind the scenes stayed organized and on track throughout the evening.
